👋

Hey, I'm Jim Gale. Welcome!

I build things that help people. Here are some projects I'm proud of, and a few contributions along the way.

AI University

An autonomous newsroom that turns the AI news cycle into curriculum every day: a brief, a two-host podcast with synthesized audio and transcripts, a lesson behind every significant story, a quiz, and a newsletter. Nothing publishes until it clears an adversarial five-agent editorial gate chain. Published daily on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube.

Alerts.City

Hyper-local alerts for weather, traffic cameras, road conditions, school closures, power outages, river levels and bridge closings, aggregated from county, state and city sources. The City of Duvall, the police, the school districts and the Duvall Chamber of Commerce all point residents here in their own published materials. During a flood, roughly 80% of the town is on it. Live for over a decade, through a full v2 rewrite.

Big Blue Spy

Solid earth, atmosphere, near space. A real-time 3D globe that makes invisible planetary forces visible: the solid-earth tide flexing the crust ±30 cm under the Moon and Sun, live earthquakes tagged with the tide state at the moment of rupture, a quake-risk field, volcanoes, precipitation radar, storms, wildfires, aurora ovals scaled by the live Kp index, solar flares, satellites and the magnetosphere. Scrub the timeline a week either way; select an earthquake and a century of that region's seismic history opens, event by event.

The tide overlay is a GLSL shader evaluating the degree-2 equilibrium displacement, and a verification script gates it against an independent Longman (1959) implementation at r > 0.99 across a global grid. It proves its own physics.

Contribution

Microsoft Copilot

Contributed to Copilot in product, internal tools, and core prompting, including the Unified Emotional Framework for user-state understanding that shaped more nuanced interactions for millions of users. Named inventor on the published patent application behind it.

Windows Virtual Shields for Arduino

I founded Windows Virtual Shields for Arduino and was its architect and developer. It turns a Windows phone into every shield a maker would otherwise buy and stack. Microsoft open-sourced both halves under MIT, and I co-authored the launch post on the Windows Developer Blog. It was the technical foundation of the World's Largest Arduino Maker Challenge, which drew over 3,000 participants and more than 1,000 project ideas in its preliminary phase alone.

HouseLinc & the Insteon developer platform

Before Microsoft I architected HouseLinc, which won Electronic House Product of the Year for 2006 and was the first product to translate X10 to Insteon, giving installers a migration path onto the new network. Alongside it I built the developer surface: SALad, a language that compiles onto microcontrollers, with its IDE, debugger, live simulator and virtual devices so integrations could be written without owning the hardware.
